Gili Trawangan is the most popular and the
largest of the three islands of the Gili’s island, Lombok, South West Tenggara Province. “The name Trawangan
originates from the Indonesian word “terowongan” (tunnel) due to the presence
of a cave tunnel built there during Japanese occupation in world war II. Many people
say, “Gili Trawangan is a paradise”. It
is considered to be a paradise because of amazing underwater world, no pollution, close to two
other islands, and friendly society.
The amazing
underwater world of Gili Trawangan can be
seen from beautiful fish and coral reef. Tropical fish
species including parrot fish,
pipe fish, puffer fish, trumpet fish, barracuda, leaf fish, cuttlefish, and
frog fish can be found there.You
can also catch a glimpse of seahorses, rays, eels, octopus, and even black and
white tip sharks.You
can also find crabs, lobsters, and shrimp at certain dive sites. Do not forget to meet nemo fish and clown fish swim with
graceful. The biorock reef restoration project on the Gili
Islands has been regenerating coral reefs for 6 years. They are biorock reefs
to grow corals and provide new fish habitats (thus creating interesting new
dive sites), biorock anti-erosion reefs to grow coral and provide fish
nurseries whilst causing sand to accumulate on the beach, it is good shallow snorkeling sites, and biorock wave breaker structures to
stop and reverse the erosion, growing the beach. Both beautiful fish and coral reef make
the underwater world of Gili Trawangan become amazing.
Using bicycle and
cidomo make Gili Trawangan has no pollution beaches. This
is the superior of it because operating
a motor vehicle is strictly prohibited there. Bicycling significantly reduces transportation emissions
while also reducing traffic congestion and the need for petroleum. Using bicycle on Gili
Trawangan make the beaches there equally clean because it uses no fuel, take a
lot less energy to make than a car, bikes does not require toxic batteries or
motor oil. Cidomo is a small horse-drawn carriage
used in the Lesser Sunda Islands of Lombok and the Gili Islands of Indonesia. It
stands for Cikar (Ci), Dokar (Do) and Mobil (Mobil), and simply described as
small horse-drawn carriage. The tires used (two tires on the right and left side) is from used cars. Those transportations keep
the cleanliness of Gili Trawangan’s beaches beside the visitors and local
people also keep the environment.
The two other islands that close with Gili Trawagan are
Gili Air and Gili Meno.
Gili
Air is closest to the Lombok mainland it is
the most overlooked of the three Gili islands in terms of development. It is about thirty
minutes from Gili Trawangan with boats from Trawangan harbour at 9.30 a.m and 4.00 p.m (IDR 25,000). Gili
Meno is the smallest of the three islands and the most peaceful
and under developed. While visiting Gili Trawangan, you can also enjoy the
beauty of the two other dykes”.
Friendly society also
one of the attractions of Gili Trawangan that is able to attract the visitors. “If you do not
believe, try surrounding Gili Trawangan on foot, you will be greeted friendly
by every resident who also crosses the paths”. You do not
